Accelerator Breaks Ground in Greater Yuma Region, Strengthening Advanced Manufacturing and High-Tech Workforce Development. The Greater Yuma Economic Development Corporation (GYEDC) is proud to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Future48 Workforce Accelerator at Arizona Western College’s Wellton Manufacturing Training Center. This new 5,600-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility will deliver specialized training programs designed to meet the growing demand for skilled talent in advanced manufacturing, electrical technology, broadband fiber optics, and solar installation.
This important milestone underscores the Greater Yuma region’s commitment to fostering a highly skilled workforce, driving innovation, and positioning the region as a competitive destination for advanced manufacturing companies and high-tech industries.
The groundbreaking event welcomed Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, Arizona Western College President Dr. Daniel Corr, the Arizona Commerce Authority, local government officials, academic leaders, and construction partners to mark the launch of this transformative project.
This facility represents a strategic investment in our workforce and a key asset in attracting and retaining innovative companies to our region. By aligning workforce development programs with the needs of our regional industries, we are strengthening the foundation for long-term economic growth and prosperity.
The Future48 Workforce Accelerator is designed to directly address the talent needs of high-wage, high-growth sectors, including advanced manufacturing, aerospace & defense, telecommunications, and renewable energy. Through close collaboration with industry partners such as TRAX International, U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground, General Motors Proving Grounds, Gowan Company, ALLO Fiber, D&H Electric, Sunray Electric, and Yuma Electric, the training programs will be tailored to meet evolving industry demands.
The Accelerator is made possible by a $3.6 million investment from the Arizona Commerce Authority (ACA), supporting the design, construction, and specialized equipment needed to train the next generation of skilled workers. The building was designed by Yuma-based Sternco Engineers and will be constructed by Pilkington Construction Company.

The Future48 Workforce Accelerator in Yuma joins a network of innovative training centers being developed across Arizona as part of the ACA’s $30 million Future48 initiative. Other accelerators are underway in Mesa (aerospace & defense), Phoenix (semiconductors), Pinal County (battery manufacturing), and Kingman (manufacturing). Each of these facilities is designed to provide hands-on, industry-specific training to meet the workforce needs of Arizona’s most critical sectors.
