New collaboration will connect agricultural startups with 500 acres of real-world testing capacity at the University of Arizona’s Yuma Agricultural Center.
Greater Yuma’s agricultural innovation economy is gaining new momentum with Reservoir Farms’ expansion into Arizona—its first location outside California.
Scheduled to become operational October 1, 2026, the pilot will give agricultural technology startups access to approximately 500 acres at the University of Arizona’s Yuma Agricultural Center. Companies will be able to test robotics, automation, artificial intelligence, sensors, and other emerging technologies under commercial desert-growing conditions during the October 2026–March 2027 winter season.
The initiative is being developed in collaboration with the University of Arizona’s Yuma Center of Excellence for Desert Agriculture, the Yuma Agricultural Center, Western Growers, John Deere, and agricultural partners across Arizona. Reservoir’s announcement describes the project as an extension of its on-farm innovation model, which connects startups directly with growers, research facilities, equipment, and real-world production environments.
Turning Agricultural Strength into an Innovation Advantage
Greater Yuma is already one of the country’s most productive agricultural regions, growing an estimated 90% of the nation’s leafy greens during the winter months. The Reservoir Farms pilot adds another dimension to that strength by positioning the region as a place where new agricultural technologies can be developed, validated, and prepared for commercial use.
For economic development, that distinction matters.
Technology companies require more than laboratory space. They need access to customers, researchers, skilled workers, infrastructure, and environments where products can be tested under authentic operating conditions. Greater Yuma brings those assets together in a region where agriculture is practiced at commercial scale and where challenges involving labor, water, heat, productivity, and resource efficiency create strong demand for practical innovation.
“The Yuma Agricultural Center provides a living laboratory for evaluating emerging technologies under the real production conditions that define desert agriculture,” said Tanya Hodges, executive director of the Yuma Center of Excellence for Desert Agriculture.
By bringing startups into that environment, the pilot can help shorten the distance between an idea and a market-ready product. It also gives participating companies opportunities to work alongside the growers, researchers, and agricultural organizations that understand specialty-crop production firsthand.
Connecting Two Major Agricultural Regions
Reservoir Farms opened its flagship innovation hub in Salinas, California, in March 2026. The Yuma pilot will allow participating startups to follow the specialty-crop production cycle from California into Arizona, creating opportunities for nearly year-round testing and product development.
That connection reinforces the longstanding relationship between the Salinas and Yuma agricultural industries. It also gives Greater Yuma a strategic role within a broader innovation corridor serving some of the nation’s most important specialty-crop regions.
From a business-attraction perspective, the model introduces entrepreneurs and technology companies to Greater Yuma at a formative stage in their growth. Successful field trials can lead to continuing research partnerships, relationships with local growers, additional investment, and—in time—the potential establishment or expansion of business operations in the region.
Building the Foundation for Future Growth
Although no specific employment or capital-investment figures have been announced for the pilot, its long-term economic value could extend well beyond the initial field trials.
A growing concentration of AgTech activity can support demand for engineers, technicians, equipment specialists, software professionals, agronomists, and skilled agricultural workers. It can also create new opportunities for local students and researchers while helping existing producers adopt technologies that improve competitiveness and resource efficiency.
The Reservoir Farms pilot complements Greater Yuma’s broader efforts to build an innovation-driven agricultural economy. GYEDC, YCEDA, and the Yuma Agricultural Center are also conducting a federally funded feasibility study for a proposed Smart Farm and AgTech incubator. That initiative is examining infrastructure, workspace, workforce training, and commercialization resources that could support emerging companies over the longer term.
Together, these efforts signal that Greater Yuma is not simply adopting agricultural technology developed elsewhere. The region is increasingly helping shape, test, and commercialize the tools that will define agriculture’s future.
