Due to its fertile soils, senior water rights to the Colorado River, and access to a reliable Arizona water supply, the Greater Yuma region supports large‑scale food production and continued advancement in agricultural technology and AG‑TECH applications. Regional farmers and food processors produce more than 170 different crops, supporting national food supply chains while utilizing precision agriculture and advanced agricultural technologies to improve efficiency, yields, and sustainability.
Within a 100‑mile radius, food processors have access to poultry operations with more than 2 million chickens and feedlots supporting approximately 750,000 head of cattle, providing reliable protein inputs. The region’s commercial dairy farms produce over 800,000 gallons of fluid milk per month, and more than 40,000 acres of wheat are cultivated annually. These operations increasingly integrate agricultural water‑conservation technologies and other innovations to support long‑term productivity and resource efficiency.
Greater Yuma is also home to the Yuma Center of Excellence for Desert Agriculture (YCEDA), a public‑private partnership that connects leading scientists and companies to testing environments for new technologies and agricultural performance improvements in desert agricultural systems. YCEDA applies science‑based solutions to address arid‑land crop production challenges, including water and disease management, crop yield optimization, food safety, and technology utilization, supporting sustainable agriculture and regenerative agriculture practices suited to desert conditions.
Supported by a food production workforce of approximately 15,000, the region supplies 90% of the nation’s winter leafy vegetables, reflecting the integration of sustainable farming practices, established agricultural operations, and modern AG‑TECH innovation. Together, these assets demonstrate how Greater Yuma supports resilient food production systems that serve both domestic and global markets.
